The story focuses on the Škrinjar family, who live in the squalid, yet homely suburb of Trešnjevka, and in particular on Tomica Škrinjar, who has fancied his pretty neighbor Janja since they were children. As they both come of age, Tomica is surprised to realise that another beautiful girl, Tonka, is blossoming right next door.
